Rings of Defense: The 13th century ushered in concentric castles. They had two rings of walls, for defense, one within the other. The inner ring was often higher, to give archers a clearer shot at attacking enemies. As years went by, rings were added to the defense and sometimes even water was used to fill the spaces between the walls.
