Page: A Knight's apprentice, this is the first stage, followed by squire, and finally knight. A page works
as a servant in his father's lord's household. Pages were taught the basics
of swordsmanship with a wooden sword. Training was quite painful for the
child, if he messed up, his teacher often dealt him a swift hard
stroke that often was bruising. A page's uniform consisted of a long shirt
that went to the knees, called a tunic. A cape fastened with a gold brooch or clasp.
The legs were covered with hose in the winter but bare in the summer and close-trimmed hair.
