The mitten gauntlet above allowed the hand to be closed into a fist because of it's overlapping plates. The finger plates were connected by a rivet at both ends of the gauntlet, this allowed the plates to pivot down as the fist closed. There were also rivets inside that connected a leather glove to the gauntlet.
