Many important events happened in the world in 2001 that will effect the world in many years to come.

War in Afghanistan

Osama Bin Laden was named the prime suspect in the September eleventh attacks. He also heads the al queda network, which is a band of pro-Islamic fundamentalists that operated in Afghanistan with the support of the government, Tailiban. Bin Laden is also accused in the other attacks on U.S. interests in Africa and the Middle East. On October 7, 2002 the U.S. and the international coalition began air strikes in Afghanistan to punish terrorists and those who harbor them.

Failing Economy

After the September 11, 2002 attacks a huge economic slowdown hit the U.S. It hit the manufacturing sector and ended the dot com boom that started in 2000 and carried through 2001. Even before September 11 soft markets and rising unemployment led the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates trying to revive consumer spending. The September 11 attacks shot down major financial markets. The month of October had the largest job losses in 21 years. It saw 415,000 jobs cut. December, the fed cut interest rates for a record eleventh time within one year.

Anthrax Scare

A short time after the September 11 attacks government officials and media outlets got letters that contained spores of deadly anthrax. A letter with Anthrax in it and written in strange block lettering was addressed to Senator Tom Daschile in Washington. It said, "you cannot stop us. We have this anthrax you die now. Are you afraid?" These letters were sent to Washington, New York, and Florida. These letters brought a new threat, the threat of biological concerns. Since October five people have died of Anthrax. Authorities have still not found the origin of the letters.

Middle East Conflict

After months of increasing violence between Palestinians and Israelis, Party leader Arial Sharon defeated Ehud Barak by a heavy margin in the February 6 special election for Prime Minister. The September 11 attacks sparked an interest in the Middle East peace process. Violence erupted again in December after explosions in Jerusalem. It killed 25 Israelis and 3 suicide bombers. This led to major Israeli military strikes against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Stem Cell Researching/Cloning

Politicians and their constituents got a crash course in biology in 2001. This happened when cutting edge technology brought up the question and debate of cloning. Stem Cells have the potential to grow into a variety of different cells. They hold great promise for treating medical conditions like Diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The Stem Cells that show the most potential come from human embryos. The idea of producing embryos for research drew the ire of abortion opponents In November an American company announced that it had cloned a human embryo jut for that purpose.
