History

Stonehenge, located in England, has an awesome history.  The people who made it went through three phases to build it.  Each of the phases were important to the making of Stonehenge.

Phase I.

The ring of Stonehenge was made first; it was two meters deep.  Scientist believe it was dug out with picks made out of antlers.  The soil of the ditch made the bank on the inside. There was a gap in the ditch out of which they made an entrance.  Inside fifty-six pits were dug.  They were almost immediatly filled but scientists don’t know why.  The Heel Stone also was setup at the entrance during this stage.

Phase II.

Wooden poles were erected during this phase.  They put some wooden poles by the north-east entrance for astronomical measurements.  Others think that the poles guided people through narrow paths to the ceremonial centre. Four large one-meter thick poles were put at the entrance during this stage.

Phase III.a.

They started to add stones during this phase.  First, the blue stones from Wales were added for reasons still unknown.  The Altar Stone was also added to the middle of the Sarsen Circle during this phase.

Phase III.b.

Two concentric pits were made outside the Sarsen Circle.Stones were never put in these two pits.  It is believed that two more rings were built outside the Sarsen Circle at this time.  Scientists say that this stage was never finished.
