Hurricane Hugo



     Hurricane Hugo devestated many places which included South Carolina, Charlston, Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle fo Palms and McClellanville. This all happened March 3, 1997. It would take two civil wars, an earthquake, and a hurricane to devastate Charlston some said. But instead it took one, Hurricane Hugo.

    By September 19th, twenty-five people were dead in the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. A tornado warning was issued because of the 135mph winds and a storm surge of 20feet.Hurricane Hugo moved forward at 30mph. It weakened to rainfall throug the mid atlantic and Northeastern states. It died as it got to the West Virginia and and Pennsylvannia area. Hugo hit north east of Charlston, South Carolina on September 21, 1989 bringing with it a 20 feet high storm surge.

    Hurricane Hugo killed 26 people in South Carolina alone. The amount of money to repair the damages would be around 7.2 billion.
 


    The bridge connecting Sullivan's Island's and Isle of Palms was blown out and only accesible by boat. After everybody pitched in South Caroling was repaired. The president helped out immedietly giving 1.1 billion.
