Write Poetry

Tanka

Line one has five syllables

Line two has seven syllables

Line three has five syllables

Line four has seven syllables

Line five has seven syllables

Haiku

Line one has five syllables

Line two has seven syllables

Line three has five syllables

Renga has the same format as tanka, but one person writes the first three lines and a second person writes the last two lines.

How to Make a Wind Poem

1.  Write one of the three types of poems using the specifications above.

2.  For a Haiku, cut three color sheets and three smaller white sheets  of paper into long, thin rectangles.  For a Tanka or Renga, cut five.

3.  Write one line on each white rectangle, but your letters must go vertically down.

4.  Glue the white sheets to the color sheets.

5.  Cut tabs for each of the color sheets and glue them to make loops.

6.  Thread a drinking straw through the tabs, and then thread a piece of yarn through the drinking straw.

8.  Tie the ends of the string together and hang it outside.  The wind will carry the poetry to the heavens.

Example Tanka

The raindrops came down.

They made puddles on the ground.

Then the sun came out.

Colors glistened in the sky.

The colors formed a rainbow.

Example Haiku

The clocks of time turn.

There is no way to stop them.

Time never returns.
