The Chinese People

In China, the elders have a special place. They are respected because of their knowledge, wisdom and their experiences. The advice they give is very well thought of by family members.

In the past, peasants of China had many children. The children had many chores and had to help look after farm animals. With many children, the parents could be sure to be cared for in their older years.

There is an ancient Chinese saying that goes "children are as precious as jade". That saying is truer today than ever before. There is a law now in China that says that parents may not have more than 1 child!!! The parents and grandparents turn all of their love and attention on that one lucky child.

Every child goes to school in China. They start at the age of 7 and go for at least 9 years. Many children go to nursery school because both of their parents go to work. After going to primary school for 6 years, children go to middle school for another 3 years.
