The Northern Alliance
|
|
Although the Taliban controls most of the country, Afghanistan is patially
controlled by the Northern Alliance. They are being helped by the
Americans to overthrow the Taliban. They fully control northeastern Afghanistan, but they partially control the center of Afghanistan. |
|
The Northern Alliance has been fighting to overthrow the Taliban for years
upon years. They were not pushing into the Taliban controlled area, but
when the attacks of September 11 occured, and the U.S. helped the Northern Alliance, they were able to push into the Taliban's area of control.
Afghanistan is heavily divided, as the map shows, but the Northern
Alliance is trying to change that and have complete control over the
country of Afghanistan.
There are many leaders of the Northern Alliance, even if they are not in
power. Here are a few:
Burhanuddin Rabbani is the nominated political leader of the Northern
Alliance.
General Mohammed Fahim is the charismatic leader of the Northern
Alliance.
Abdullah Abdullah is the foreign minister and principle spokesman of the
Northern Alliance.
Rawan Farhadi is the permanent representative of the ousted government
of Burhanuddin Rabbani to the United Nations.
General Rashid Dostum is the leader of the movements against the
Taliban.
Ismail Khan is an escaped prisoner of the Taliban, recently being a factor
of the fighting.
