This area of the state looks just like it's name suggests: it has low open valleys and narrow ridges that run parallel. There are flat and fertile farmlands with fields of grain, pastures for cattle, and rows of apple orchards. Elevation ranges from 700 to 1,600 feet above sea level. Steep and narrow ridges capped with limestone divide the valleys. Lowland areas are about 210-240m above sea level, but the higher ridges may be above 480m.
Northwest Georgia is here divided into four parts--the Cumberland Plateau, the Chickamaunga Valley, the Armuchee Ridges, and the Great Valley.
