The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The VVMF ( Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund), the idea of Jan
Scruggs, was established on April 27, 1979 to raise funds for the memorial.

More than 275,000 individuals, along with corporations, foundations,
and civic organizations, contributed over $7 million dollars to build the
memorial.

A 21 year old Yale university student named Maya Ying Lin
submitted the winning design in a national competition.

Frederick Hart sculpted the memorial located in Washington,
D.C.

The memorial was dedicated on November 13, 1982.

The black granite mirrorlike walls shaped like a V reflect
the surrounding trees, lawns, and people looking for names.

It has more than 58,000 names of people that died in the
Vietnam War listed in the chronological order of the date of casualty.

It was built to honor the people that died in the Vietnam
War.
Did you know...?
Each name is preceded or followed by a diamond or a cross.
The diamond denotes a confirmed death. The cross denotes either missing
person or prisoner at the end of the war.
