The Washington Monument

This monument was built in honor of George Washington.

The Washington monument stands in Washington D.C., near the
Potomac River, about halfway between the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.

The monument was designed by Robert Mills.

The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 and
was not completed until 1884. It was opened in 1888.

It is 555 feet 51/8 inches (169.29 meters) high and has a
small pyramid on top that is called the pyramidon.

It measures 55 feet 11/2 inches (16.9 meters) along each
of its 4 sides at the bottom.

The walls of the Washington Monument are 15 feet (4.6 meters)
thick at the bottom and 18 inches (46 centimeters) thick at the top.

Inside the monument, stairs lead to the top of the monument.
People visit the monument.

The monument has the shape of the obelisks in ancient Egypt,
but it is several times larger than they were.
