"The Star Spangled Banner"

-
The "Star Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key.
-
It was written on September 14, 1814 after the overnight
shelling of Fort McHenry by the British.
-
Frances Scott Key was so happy to see the U.S. flag still
flying over the fort at daybreak that he wrote a poem called "The Defense
of Fort M'Henry."
-
The poem became a popular song sung to the tune of "To Anacreon
in Heaven" and was renamed "The Star Spangled Banner."
-
It was made the official National Anthem in 1931.
Did you know...?
The Army and Navy adopted this song as their anthem before
it was made official in 1931.
