Yellowstone National Park

-
Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in
the world.
-
It became an official national park on March 1, 1872.
-
The park covers over 2.2 million acres.
-
Yellowstone National Park is located in Wyoming, Idaho, and
Montana.
-
Most of the landscape was created by periodic volcanic eruptions
more than 60,000 years ago.
-
Yellowstone National Park was named after the Yellowstone
River. The river was named for the yellow rocks along its banks in the
north part of the park.
-
Yellowstone has more geysers and hot springs than any other
site in the world. These are caused by a large mass of molten rock called
magma that is 2 miles under the surface of the land.
-
The highest point is Eagle Peak at 11,358 feet.
-
Visitors first came in 1895.
-
More than 200 species of birds and over 40 kinds of other
animals live in the park.
Did you know...?
John Colters traveled with Lewis and Clark to Yellowstone.
They are probably the first white men to see the park.
