The Capitol Building

The statue on top of the building is called the Statue of
Freedom and stands 19 1/2 feet (29 meters) tall.

Congress meets in this building on Capitol Hill.

In 1792, the government held a contest for the design. An
American doctor and amateur architect named William Thornton submitted
the winning entry.

The Rotunda forms the center of the building. It is 95 feet
in diameter and 183 feet high.

The building has 540 rooms.

Congress met in the building in 1800 for the first time.

In 1814 , during the War of 1812, British troops set fire
to the Capitol building.
