George Washington
Did You Know...?
- George Washington was the first president of the United States. He was president from 1789-1797.
- George's nickname was "Father of His Country."
- He was born the oldest son of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington, in Virginia on February 22, 1732.
- George spent most of his time on the family estate on Pope's Creek on the Potomac River.
- Even though George did not have a lot of schooling, his early notebooks indicate that he read in geography, military history, agriculture, deportment, and composition.
- His father died in 1743. Soon after, George went to live with his half brother, Lawrence, at Mount Vernon, Lawrence's plantation on the Potomac River.
- Lawrence died in 1752, so George took over the plantation.
- He had no children.
- George died on December 14, 1799.
- George Washington was buried in Mount Vernon, Va. in the family vault.
Even though many people wanted Washington to run for a third term as president, he refused.
