About the Author

Madeleine L’Engel was born on November 29, 1918.   She started out working in theater then left for her husband, Hugh Franklin so there wouldn’t be trouble with them in the same profession. She had always been interested in writing part time but upon leaving the theater she took up writing full time. After early success with her first book: 18 Washington, South: A Comedy In One Act, she had a dry period in which very few books were published. Then her family went on a ten-week camping trip. During this time she was inspired to write A Wrinkle In Time.  She had a journal during this trip inspiring the book, the journal also inspired a later book: The Moon by Night. She later wrote many books including: The Moon by Night, The Arm of The Starfish, The Young Unicorns, The Other Side of the Sun, and Dragons in the Water.

Currently Madeleine L’Engel is 82 and living in different places during the year. Her son Bion recently died at the age of 47. Although the cause has been concealed it is believed that he was ill for some time. He had suffered liver damage the year before due to side effects of a prescribed medication. His death was unexpected and greatly saddened his family.

There is talk about a new book that is about Meg Murry at age 50. Supposedly Madeleine L’Engel is half way through the manuscript. I wonder if this new book will be as good as her previous works.
