Peasants
|
||
We woke up about 6:00 in the morning. We had few rights
and very little money, and we were almost at the Lord's complete mercy.
We had to get the Lord's crops and ours too. I also did all the other
tasks the Lord wanted like cutting wood, storing grain, and repairing
roads and bridges. We had to pay many kinds of taxes and rent. We had
to bring grain to the Lord's mill, to be ground. We also had to bake for
the Lord and bring grapes to the wine press. Each of these deeds meant
another payment to the Lord. Money was scarce so we usually paid in crops. We ate black bread, eggs, poultry, and vegetables like cabbage and turnips. We could not hunt or fish because every thing on the Manor was owned by the Lord. |
