Surgery

If you lived in the Middle Ages the man that cut your hair was probably the same man who would perform surgery on you if you needed it. They were good at cutting! Surgery was only performed as a last resort. The most common form of surgery was bloodletting; it was meant to restore the balance of fluids in the body.

Many people were used as experiments as surgeon learned more and more about the human body. As time went by they learned many procedures which are still used today.

Typical Medical Treatment

Good medical treatment was mostly available to the wealthy. Lots of the poor people died young. Remedies were mostly made from herbs. Some doctors believed that the color of flowers and other properties of the plant indicated what diseases they could cure. For example, yellow flowers such as the dandelion were linked to diseases with yellow bile or a disease that caused your skin to go yellow.

Some doctors relied on chants, spells, and healing stones.

Even though these practices were used there were also a lot of cures used and perfected that are similar to some of the same things that doctors do now.
