George and Martha: The Complete Story Of Two Best Friends By: James Marshall and Maurice Sendak

Summary: George and Martha are two Hippos. They are best friends.  They do everything together such as go to the beach, the movies, and just hang around together. They learn the same lessons as humans about the ups and downs of friendship.  This book will teach you lessons about friendship and what to do or not to do during a friendship.

      Isabelle and the Angel by: Thierry Magnier and Georg Hallensleben

Summary: Isabelle is a pig who lives alone.  She enjoys eating, but sometimes eats too much.  She likes to paint pictures with smeared pink cake and strawberry jam.  But what she likes the most is to go to the museum, sit in her favorite red velvet chair and stare at her favorite painting.  There is a little boy Angel who is painted in the picture and just smiles at her.  One day the angel comes to life asks Isabelle why she comes to the library everyday.  Before she has time to answer, he plays a sweet tune on his trumpet and goes back into the painting.  Isabelle is then determined to never leave her friend’s side and watches over him and the library everyday.  The Angel does the same for Isabelle.    

      The Lonely Doll by: Dare Wright

Summary: A lonely doll named Edith lives in a great house and is very happy, except she longs for a friend.  She sees two teddy bears playing in her garden; Mr. Bear and Little Bear.  Little Bear brings fun and pranks to her life.  Mr. Bear often gives Little Bear a good spanking.  The cast of characters are vividly brought to life and they tell the story of their friendship.

       Little Bear’s Friend by: Else Holmelund Minarik

Summary: Little Bear is back in his third book, with all his old friends- Owl, Cat, Duck, and Hen, but now he has a new friend, but just for the summer.  Her name is Emily and she has her doll Lucy with her.  She brings her everywhere she goes and right away introduces Lucy to Little Bear.  At the end of the summer, Emily has to go back and she finds the perfect present for Little Bear- a fountain pen.  Little Bear can’t find a use for it, until he decides to write his first letter to Emily and he uses the pen.

      Friendly Tales: Piglet by: A. A. Milne

Summary: Read to find out the tale behind why Piglet is such a good friend.  A cuddly attached plush Piglet is attached to the book.

 

     Miss Spider’s Tea Party by: David Kirk and Antoinette White


Summary: Miss Spider is invites a few of her friends over for tea, but since spiders have the habit of eating other insects; no one wants to join her.  They all dash away from her web and hide from her.  One little moth gets caught in the rain and its wings are too heavy for it to fly away.  Miss Spider gets him inside and serves him food and wine and instead of eating him, she sends him on his way.  She waits for more guests and makes them trust her.  Many flies, ants, bugs, and spiders come to Miss Spider and they learn to trust her and they become good friends with her.

 

     Little Pig, Biddle Pig by: David Kirk

  Summary: Little Pig is the cleanest pig around.  She is sparkly and happy; but she is very lonely.  She watches all the pigs jump and play in the mud.  They get all dirty and they have a good time with their friends.  She decides she is too lonely when she stays clean, so she decides to become friends with them and she plays with them in the mud.  Even though she gets very dirty, she is happy and has a great time.

      Stellaluna by: Janell Cannon

Summary: Stellaluna is a new baby bat that doesn’t know how to fly yet.  She was clutching to her mother as she flew through the night sky.  A bat attacked them and Stellaluna fell far down through the sky.  She lands in a birds’ nest and the mother bird agrees that Stellaluna can stay, if she learns to act like a bird.  Stellaluna does, but when she tells the birds about the way bats act they are very confused.  They say, “How can we be so different and feel so alike? And how can we feel so different and be so much alike?”  They know it is a big mystery, but they’re friends and that’s a fact!

      That’s What a Friend Is by: P.K. Hallinan

Summary: A great rhyming book about things that make a friend.  It tells you what a friend should do for you and what a friend is good for.  It lists what friends should do together and the fun times you will have without even realizing it.  “And when all’s said and done, the natural end is a friend is a friend…. THAT’S what a friend is!
