Physical Description
Humpback whales have a very awkward appearance. They have a long body. When viewed from above, the humpback whale appears rounded and broad but maintaining a slim profile. A humpback is black on its upper side and has a creamy white underside. Their jaw has a rounded tip with a single hair. On the back of the humpback there is a lump or ‘hump’, giving this peculiar whale its name. Beyond the navel there are 20-35 grooves. Their flippers are between 1/4-1/3 the length of it’s body. Their fluke (tail) can be up to 18 feet long! A male humpback is 40-48 feet long and weighs 25-40 tons. The female however, is the same weight but is 45 feet.
