Humpback Whales

‘What they eat’

Can you believe that humpback whales are over 20 tons? You’d think that to get to that weight you would have to eat things like sharks or humans. Believe it or not, they eat microscopic and small animals. Some of these creatures are Plankton, Zooplankton, small invertebrates and small fish. Humpback whales eat an average of 1 ½ tons each day. Humpback whales do not have teeth. Instead they have hundreds of fringed overlapping plates in their mouth. These plates are called ‘baleen’. The humpback gets its food by engulfing water. The humpback then pushes out the water and swallows the fish that are left behind. Humpback whales eat in a very peculiar way.
