Venus
Venus is the easiest planet to spot in the sky. Some people say it is even brighter than any star! But Venus is not a star at all. Astronomers can’t see the surface of the planet because it is covered in clouds. The clouds reflect light from the sun, causing the planet to shine brightly. Venus is sometimes called Earth’s ‘twin’ because the planets are almost exactly the same size. Take a guess which planet is hottest. Actually, it is Venus, not Mercury. Venus’s atmosphere is almost constructed of only carbon dioxide (C
2O). If you’ve ever heard of the greenhouse effect, that’s what happened on Venus. The carbon dioxide captures heat from the sun, and the heat is unable to escape. So, Venus just gets hotter and hotter! It can get to 890F! When it’s hot, it’s HOT! The pressure on Venus is 90 times the pressure on Earth. Also, the clouds on Venus aren’t composed of water vapor. They’re composed of sulfuric acid. Sounds like a fun place, huh?
