Hurricanes are named so that we can identify storms and follow them across the Atlantic Ocean.
Each letter of the alphabet is used-except for Q, U, and Z!
In the late 1800's, an Austalian meteorologist started naming hurricanes after women!

However, by 1979, people were more aware of equality for women. Hurricanes then began to have both male and female names!

We use French, Spanish, and English names. That's because these are the major languages spoken by the people in the countries along the Atlantic Ocean. They are most likely to be affected by hurricanes.
