Facts on Ocean Pollution

1. More than 60 million gallons of oil enter the ocean every year, but it is not reported.

2. Metals and degrading chemicals threaten inland and coastal waters.

3. Oil seeps from oil-bearing rock layers into the ocean as part of a natural process.

4. Disasters make headlines, but hundreds of millions of gallons of oil quietly end up in the seas every year, mostly by non-accidental sources.

5. Around the world, sewage flows into coastal waters, carrying organic waste and nutrients that can lead to oxygen depletion. The sewage may also carry disease causing bacteria and parasites that can cause beaches and shellfish beds to be closed.

6. More than 80% of marine pollution starts on land and is caused by humans!
