Algae
There are many types of algae in the world. These are just a few you will see on our page.
Brown Algae

Brown algae can live in deeper water than green algae, because they like cooler temperatures better. They can be found as deep as 100 ft. in cold waters. There are about 1,500 types of brown algae. Most of them are marine and included in this group are the wracks, rockweeds and kelps

Green Algae

There are about 7,000 types of green algae growing in a lot of different habitats. The green algae is a paraphyle group because it doesn't have Plantea. Like the plants, they contain two forms of Chlorophyll, which they use to capture light energy to fuel the manufacture of sugars.

Red Algae

The red algae contains more marine species than green and brown algae put together. There are 4,000 members in this group and 98% are marine. The red seaweeds can be found at the greatest depths, from 200 to 600 meters (650-1,970 ft.). At this depth, the water is much calmer and the algae tends to be more delicate. East coast species are Irish Moss, Dusle, and purplenori. Red algae can be found in warm or cold waters. Along with Kelp, this group contains the most economically important of all marine algae.
