The first Japanese dive bombers appeared over Pearl Harbor at 7:55 am (local time). It was followed by nearly 200 aircraft, including torpedo planes, bombers, and fighter planes. Much of the damage was done by Japanese kamikaze (suicidal) pilots. The Arizona, California, and the West Virginia sunk and the Oklahoma was capsized. Heavy damage was done to the battleships Maryland, Nevada, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. More than 140 aircraft were destroyed and more than 2,300 people died. The Allies wanted Japan to surrender unconditionally. Japan refused. So on August 6, 1945, the Allies dropped the first Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. As Japan hadn't contacted them, the Allies dropped the second Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, three days later. Japan realized that resistance was futile, and on September 2, 1945, Japan unconditionally surrendered to the Allies on the U.S.S. Missouri. |
