Landing begins a long time
before you actually touch the ground. The pilot and co-pilot will
begin to lower flaps and slats and cause other mechanical things to
happen. Just like putting a tape in a VCR, when the pilot begins
to do these things, noises happen. Strange noises! Noises
like you might or might not have heard on takeoff. They are
normal.
The Flight Attendant will begin to get
the plane ready to land, too. A sign will light up telling
passengers to put on their seat belts. This keeps everyone from
moving around and makes you safer. The Flight Attendant will be
straightening up the cabin until the plane starts to land. This
saves them time since there is not all that much time between when the
plane lands and when it has to take off again.
Yea to window seats! Here's when
it's nice to have one. As the plane lands, you can see all of the tiny people get closer and closer. It's kind of
neat. The Air Traffic Controllers are talking to the pilot and
sometimes two planes want to land at the same time. Since THAT
wouldn't be a good idea and the planes might crash into each other [not
a good idea, either], your plane might be told to circle around the
airport again. This is called 'holding'. Some people get
upset about 'holding' because it delays them. Get out that book
you have been reading. This might take awhile.
As the plane finally lands, you will hear
lots of different, but completely normal, noises. Some of the
noises will be caused by opening the wheel areas so that they come down for landing.
