After the battle for the Gronzy oil field in late summer of 1942, the new battle ground was for Stalingrad. Stalin issued orders that no retreats from Stalingrad were to happen and he sent troops to reinforce the city's defenses. Over the next few months the battle was. At the end of August, a bombing raid destroyed most of the city. After that though the German forces were forced to hand to hand combat with the Soviet forces for every inch of the city. Battles took place in stairways, halls and cellars of every house. The Luftwaffe, or air force, bombed the city and Russian forces unceasing. In early November, the German army finally had the entire city encircled. But the Soviet's weren't going down that quickly. Finally cracks were starting to show in the Third Reich and Hitler was forced to pull a huge force of men and supplies to North Africa. Stalin and the Soviets decided the time was ripe counterattack to save the city. Within a few days, the German forces were the ones that were surrounded. They however stayed in harms way because Hitler would not let them retreat. 1942 ended as it began, the Germans on defense. Operation Barbossa is starting to look like a failure.
