In the Tehran Conference, Stalin promised to launch a major offense to follow Operation Overlord. So when the Operation Overlord happened on June 6, 1944, Stalin planned Operation Bagration for the end of June.

On June 22, the third anniversary of Hitler's invasion of Russia, the Soviets launched their attack. When the attack came, only the German Army Group controlled a major area of Soviet land. In less then two weeks, 70% of the Germans divisions were gone. The Soviets were not only pushing on them but also to the northern German forces. Everywhere on the Eastern front, the Germans were
retreating all over.

By the end of July, the Soviets were pressing closer and closer to the Polish capital of Warsaw. The Germans however encircled the city and halted the Russian push. By mid-August, the German Army Group Center had been destroyed, the Soviet offensive had moved 350 miles west of The Red Army took Warsaw and Romania.

The Russians then entered Bulgaria and where able to get an armistice and declaration of war on Germany from them. Finland then gave in to the Red Army. They signed an armistice and withdrew the Soviet troops inside Finland. Hitler then evacuated his troops from Finland. The Red Army marched on to Belgrade Yugoslavia on October 20. Their next stop was Budapest, Hungary By the end of 1944 Hungary joined the other Russian occupied nations to declare war on Germany The tide of the war is turning more and more against the German forces.
