On the beginning of 1944, the Germans had been expelled from Northern Caucasus, most of Ukraine, and were trapped in Crimea. The Red Army now had a two-to-one advantage over the Germans and were ready to attack.

Through the winter months, the Germans tried desperately to hold their lines. Part of the German force was driven all the way back to Polish 1939 border while the other half held it's ground.

The Germans had survived a third winter, but the spring started with a new Soviet offense in the Ukraine. The Germans quickly were either forced to retreat or were encircled by the oncoming Red Army. By May, Crimea was evacuated. On May 9, the Soviets retook Sevastopol. The Red Army had moved 165 miles and were still going strong.
