Operation Red was to
capture all of France. The French put up a defense line but it caved at the first sight of
the German Army. The government then evacuated Paris, which was declared an open city
and left undefended. When the Germans marched through on June 13th they found it largely
deserted. The British and French government were discussing how to beat Germany.
The
French decided to surrender to the Germans. They believed that would lead to the end of the
war for the all. On June 21st, the French surrendered to the Germans and France no longer
existed.
Hitler's next plan for his army was the attack on Britain, known as Operation Sea Land. He faced many problems with this decision because, first, he had told too many people that Great Britain should not be attacked. Second, he had never planned on making Britain part of Germany. The third was the most important if Britain where taken, they could continue the war from Canada. Despite this Hitler ordered Operation Sea Lion. On August 13th, the German Air Force began to bomb the British land. However with the threat of being seen by radar, Germany could not do much damage yet. The actual land attack was postponed and inevitably cancelled due to bad weather. Hitler would have to continue his attack plans for Britain but Japan not destroyed any hope of that. They brought the United States into the war. |
