On May 13, 1931, the International Olympic Committee announced that the 1936 Olympics would be held in Berlin, Germany. At the time of the announcement, Hitler was not in control of Germany and most felt this Olympics would be nothing out of the ordinary. The ironic thing about the games is that Berlin was to host the 1916 games that were cancelled due to World War I. Now Berlin would be given its second chance. As 1933 came around, Hitler was awarded power. At first Hitler believed that the Olympics were nothing more then a festival set up by Jews. But as Nazi Germany relied more on propaganda, the games would seem the perfect way to show the world how great Nazi Germany really was. Hitler was convinced and pledged that the games would happen and that Nazi Germany would financially support it with 20,000,000 Reichmarks or 8,000,000 dollars. Berlin now had to begin to prepare for the games. Hitler’s first step was to take over German sports and make it Nazi sports. As he did he enforced the "Only Aryans" or "the people who first lived in Germany were allowed to compete" rule. This limited all Jews and other minorities from their chance on the German team. As Hitler was doing this however, other countries were having second thoughts. They each had many debates over whether the games should be moved or not. After the German Propaganda put it's spin on it, Berlin was finalized as the host of the 1936 Olympic games. |
