On December 18, 1940, Hitler declared that he wanted to attack the Soviet Union because it would give Germany the "space and resources needed for his master world." He also wanted to strike before England and the Union made an alliance. From July 1941 till the invasion, Hitler began to build his forces on the Eastern Front. Germany had a major non-battle victory when Romania and Finland both said they would help in the invasion of the Union. Germany's only problem was that Italy had been taken and that left Germany vulnerable to attack from the south. The Union also found out about what was going to happen and started sending "gifts" to Germany. Hitler decided however to attack and attack quickly.

Hitler's campaign against the Soviet Union started by sending 7.2 million troops into the Soviet land. They caught the red army off guard and had a quick success. By July 17th, the Germans were less then two miles from Moscow. The attack was postponed as the winter  immobilized tanks and made it difficult for troops to move. The Red Army was quite ready and used the snow to begin a counterattack against the Germans. This forced the Germans to retreat. Hitler was not yet finished however.

The next summer, Germany began a new offensive with three main goals. First, capture Leningrad, second, join the Flemish army, and third cut of Moscow's oil supply by crossing the Volga River. The attack made it through the Volga River and they were very close to Stalingrad. Hitler was telling advisers that the Soviet Union was finished by June. The biggest mistake of his life would soon be coming.

Once Hitler decided that he would hold Stalingrad, he made sure that he would lose the battle for the Union. His army was quickly surrounded by five armies and over 200,000 Germans were taken prisoner, the rest were able to escape in the heat of battle. While in the Soviet Union, Hitler became upset and   ordered that all Soviet Jews be murdered along with all communist. This meant that, as Russia was a communist state, all Russians were to be killed. For every German killed in the campaign, Hitler killed 50-100 Russians. Although the battle was terrible, it was the first turning point of the war for the Allied Power.
