It
is rumored that on January 10, 1940, Hitler was rumored to have told his
generals he would invade Belgium and other countries to the west of
Germany. 2 million troops were sent to the borders of these countries
before Germany had to call of the invasion until spring due to weather.
Belgium felt that they were protected from Hitler due to their neutrality. They were sadly mistaken when on May 10, 1940, the Germans launched a huge invasion against Belgium and the Netherlands. Belgium was in desperate need of support from the Allies because they felt that their neutrality would protect them and that they would break that neutrality if British and French troops were let in. So they waited for days as the reinforcements to come. This surprise attack caused a shake up in the British government. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was forced to resign over the invasion, but that wasn't Belgium's main concern. Germany was making tremendous strides in Belgium. They overran Brussels, Belgium's capital followed by the taking Antwerp, Belgium's main port city. Belgium fell within days to Nazi Germany.
