Even after a horrible loss at Moscow, Hitler would not allow his generals to retreat. After many different pleas, Hitler was starting to lose confidence in them. All through December, Hitler fired many different top commanders, which climaxed at the firing of the highest army commander-in-chief, General Walter Brauchitsch. Hitler decided to not replace him and assume the rule himself.

By December, the Red Army had lost more then 4 million men, and they knew that Hitler thought that they were weak. In less then six days, 400 towns and villages were liberated by the Soviets. Operation Barabossa had failed, yet Hitler will not change strategy even as the Nazi forces were driven back home.
