Nazi Germany realized that to win a war, they needed the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union also realized that in order to protect itself from the Nazi war machine, they needed to protect themselves now. As soon as March 1939, Stalin was in the consideration stage of figuring out how to strike a deal. The diplomatic part of negotiation was very hard and very delicate stage, all sides wanted to minimize a threat of attack and maximize freedom to do actions. France and Britain had flirted with Stalin to try and make a treaty but were not really ready to commit because they hoped that the Nazis and Communists would wipe each other out. Their other fear was that if war started, the Soviet Union would take control of the continent. Poland was very unhappy with the current negotiation stage. They told both Germany and the Soviet Union, stay out! France and Britain were ready to announce that they would be the guardians of free Europe. They would protect Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Poland. Nazi Germany and also appear that they will be able to strike the deal of lifetime.
