The FBI is the chief investigating of the U.S Department of Justice.The FBI investigates more than 260 types of Federal crimes.The FBI also gathers about individuals or groups that it believes are dangerous to national security.The FBI's investigators are called special agents.
FBI Agents
The FBI is headed by a director, who is appointed by the president. After the president appoints someone the Senate most approve the presidents choice .If they Senate approves him, he becomes the FBI director. The director supervises the FBI headquarters in Wasington,D.C. The FBI has about 22,000 agents.The FBI has about 75 offices.
Criminal Investigation
The FBI investigates more than 260 tpyes of Federal Crimes. These crimes might include assult on the president,hijacking,bombings,and bank robberies. They also investigate crimes of stolen property taken from one state to another.The FBI also helps catch criminals,and fights organized crime. They also works with the FDA to fight drugs.
Intelligence Operations
Intelligence operations of the FBI consist of gathering information about organizations or individuals involved in criminal activites. These operations investigate riots, spy activites, treason, and threats to overthrow the goverment. The FBI then reports this information to the president,Congress,or to the Justice Depatment.
History
In 1908 Charles J. Bonaparte organized a group of special investigators in the Justice Department. The first director of the FBI was Stanley W. Finch.Later J.E Hoover a Justice Department lawyer, became the director in 1924 and headed the Justice Department until 1972. Congress gave it its current name in 1935.
