How to make a Montage

Montage above created by Project Arts teacher,
        Theresa Schumacher as a model

Our class made family montages during art. We had to bring in copies of family photos to school (or we scanned originals and made copies).  We cut the pictures out and used acrylic glue to paste them on a piece of lucite (plastic). If you would like to make one of your family, here are the instructions.

Materials :

Scanned family photo (as many as possible so you can cut out different family members and put them together in the montage)
Scissors
Acrylic clear glue
Tempera paint
Plastic frame
Felt (same size as the plastic frame)
Glue gun and glue sticks
Decoration cord
Buttons
Rubber Cement

Procedure :

1. Cut out the family photos.
2. When you are done, use a paint brush to put the acrylic glue on the plastic frame. Use light sideways strokes.
3. Place the photos (facing down) on the plastic frame. Rub your finger gently across each photo making sure that there are no air bubbles.
4. After you have checked there are no air bubbles left,  use a paintbrush and gently apply acrylic glue onto the back of the photos. Let it dry for 24 hours.
5. Mix tempera paint (any colors you want) with about a tablespoon of acrylic glue. Use the tempera paint to paint the back of the frame. Let it dry for 24 hours.
6. When it is dry, apply rubber cement on to the top of the plastic frame.
7. Place a felt backing onto the rubber cement.
8. You can decorate your montage by using a glue gun and decorative cord around the edges.
9. Take the buttons and glue it on to the part where the ends of the cord meet. Let it dry for about 1 minute.
10. You're done! Now you have a beautiful family montage.
