Green Card

The official name of a Green Card is the Alien Registration Receipt Card. Those who are granted a Green Card from the U.S. government have special rights and privileges, such as the right to earn money and have a job.  In the 1940’s when it was first known the card issued was green plastic with a person's  photo for identification, a registration number, name of the person, and the person's date of birth. The card was blue in the 1960’s and 1970’s.  In the 1980’s it turned white and became yet another color, pink, in the 1990’s.   People still call it the Green Card because of it's original color. The answer is that its original color was green, so its name came from the color.  When you get a Green Card  (Resident Card) you also get an alien registration receipt card.
