My Immigration Story
by Shelly Basdeo

This is a picture of my grandparents.

In the year 1982, my parents emigrated from Guyana to the United States of America, on the airline called Guyana Airways. It took them five hours to get to New York City. My parents came to build a better life for their future children. In Guyana, opportunity was very limited, especially if you did not have any money or the means.  They went to live in the borough of Queens in New York City.

When my parents finished building a house in Queens, my aunts and uncle started to go to school. They went to Queens College so they could live the American dream. When they graduated, they started to work. Together they saved enough money to buy a house and a car in Florida.  These things helped them to make a new home for themselves and for their children.

They moved to Florida a few years later. There they had their first child who they named Stephanie Basdeo. Then three years later. they had their second child, me.   When I was one year old my Mom died. My dad remarried and had three more children named Sherry, Sally and Shiv. They continue to live in Florida.  My sister and I live in New York with my aunts, and we visit my father in Florida
