I am from China. I took an airplane to U.S. The trip was very long. It took about 18 hours.
I was a college teacher China and I am still teaching now in a high school in Manhattan. I came to U.S. to pursue my graduate degree in French literature. My goal was to continue higher education and be successful professionally.
Life was very difficult when I arrived here because I was homesick and lonely. I arrived in Lexington, Kentucky on August 18, 1986. After I earned Master Degree two years later I moved to New York City because it’s a little easier to find a job. Although some of my friends came to the United States before me, I didn’t ask anybody to arrange anything for me. Before I started teaching, I worked as a librarian in New York Public Library.
My first impression of U.S. is that this is a great country, even though it’s not perfect. I came alone here first and a year later my husband joined me. I knew English before I came. As a matter of fact, I used to teach English in China.
In 1995 and 1999 my husband and I, together
with our two U.S. born children, went back to China to visit our family
and friends. That is the country that I have many sweet memories of.
