| My wife came to the U.S.A. first so she applied for my visa. I came to the U.S. for better prospects, a better future. I decided to come to the U.S. because I knew it was different. Sources such as books and newspapers said that the U.S.A. is a great country in every respect. My information was accurate because when I came here to the U.S. I enjoyed it a lot. I was really feeling bad for my family and friends whom I was leaving because the U.S. and the country which I came from, Bangladesh, are 12,000 miles apart. I brought some money with me to be able to pay my expenses for a period of time. There was a house of worship where I could pray and there were people with whom I could socialize. I had to adjust my sleeping habits and driving habits when I arrived. |
| Before I came to the U.S. I was a banker in Bangladesh. I was able to have the same job as I did back home. I went for an interview at a bank. It was a 3 part interview and I was selected. Then I had a medical test. The name of the bank was Chemical Bank, and I had to attend 4 weeks of training. Soon affter I joined the bank I became the "Best Employee" 3 times. I stayed at the bank for 5 years. During my 5 year career in the banking industry, I successfully completed my banking diploma course from the Institute of Banking. All tution fees were fully paid by Chemical Bank. |
| I had to submit my resignation because I wanted to start a new business career with my wife. When I I submitted my resignation my management did not release me until they got a proper replacement and that took 2 and a half months . I am very happy that I am here because I got a better job, a better education and better earnings. I keep in touch with my family and friends in Bangladesh through tele-communication, faxes and e-mail and of course I go home to visit. My family’s reaction to my immigrating to the U.S. was that they were upset because I was so far away from them. Later they came to accept it for the sake of my improved prospects. One of the things I notice is that people here are very sincere in their day to day working activities. |

The Immigration of
My Mom,
Mina Farah

| My mom came to the U.S. in
1985. She got here before my dad. She use to go to dentistry school back
home. She met my dad through one of her friends in dentistry school because
her friend was my dad’s sister. When my mom came to the U.S. she applied
for a visa for my dad to come to this country. In Bangladesh she
was a dentist and now in N.Y. she is a dentist. She worked very hard to
become a dentist in the U.S. because she was a good one in Bangladesh and
she wanted to continue in her profession. She had 13 jobs in
one year. She use to work as a dental
assistant, a medical assistant (and draw blood from patients for a doctor), she worked in McDonald's and many other places. Now she writes books and she is a journalist as well as a dentist. She is very well known in Bangladesh because she writes about women's rights. She has even been a guest on Larry King Live (for CNN on television). She is also a mother of 4 children. |
| My dad use to work as a banker in Manhattan, and my mom use to work close by. They use to sit together on a bench near their jobs. They would eat lunch there and talk. Later on when my mom got a license for dentistry she started a dental clinic called Joy Dental Clinic. At that time my mom needed help with paperwork and bills, and it was too soon for her to hire somebody. My dad decided he had to quit his banking job to help my mom. Then when he quit his job he opened one laundromat and kept it for quite some time. Then he sold it and got another one. He sold that one, too and bought yet another one. My mom and my dad now own buildings in a lot of places. They have apartment buildings, grocery stores and more. This country gives many opportunities to those who work hard. |
| I interviewed my parents because I wanted to know their story and show all of you what they had to go through when they wanted to immigrated to the United States. From their story you can see how hard but very successful it was. I play the tabla which is played in Bangladesh. |
