My Grandfather's Journey to America
  as told to Ashley Prashad

My grandfather's name is Narbada Persaud. He emigrated from Guyana to the United States in 1972 for better economic and educational opportunities. He knew that the United States was a prosperous industrialized country. At first, living in America was a challenge for my grandfather because he came to a different environment with no family, relatives, or friends. He had to seek employment and a place to live.

My grandfather had to find a job to support himself and his family back in Guyana. This was a very difficult task because he was an illegal alien. The harsh winters were hard for him because he came from a tropical country. He needed warm clothing and a place to live. Fortunately he found a good job that sponsored him allowing him to be here legally. He was able to send for his family so they could come to America as legal aliens.

Despite the many challenges, my grandfather succeeded in making a productive new life. He was able to send for his family. His children were able to receive a sound education. He was able to purchase a house for his family in a few years and provide for all their   needs.  Immigrating to America proved to be a great decision with no regrets for my grandfather and his family. Today, he is proud to be an American.
