SKILLED WORKERS
![]() Slaves lived on large plantations. These plantations were often miles away from cities. So, the plantation had to take care of all of its needs. Big plantations grew all of their food and made clothes. They made their own furniture. They had carpenters and blacksmiths. These slaves knew the trade and were respected by other slaves and the masters. Many women slaves helped deliver and raise masters children. Women who deliver babies are called midwives. Some slave midwives were so good that they were called by other plantations to deliver babies. They delivered babies for both masters and slaves. Other slaves were skilled cooks or made beautiful quilts and clothing for slaves and masters.
