RUNAWAY SLAVES
BACK TO LIFE
Many slaves did not want to live in slavery. Many thought it is better to die than to be a slave. They tried to run away from the plantations. This was very hard. Slaves had no money. They could not take supplies. Often, they did not have shoes and good clothes. They had to go by foot and move at night so no one would see them. They had to go through dark woods that they did not know without food for days. They had to cross big rivers. Patrols were waiting to catch them  everywhere outside plantations. These patrols would catch runaway slaves and get money reward for returning them. If the slave was caught running away, they would be punished.  Sometimes they were tied to the trees and whipped until they were bleeding. Sometimes the masters cut their toes so that they cannot run again. Sometimes they were sold. Some slaves succeeded in running away. They reached the safe house on the underground railroad and became free.
