It also made slaveowners responsible for keeping slaves in control, so that they would not start rebellions. This act was passed after the Stono rebellion in 1739.">   -->  South Carolina Act of 1740 <option value="Southern states wanted to count slaves as voting persons. They thought this will give them more power in the government. They also knew that masters could make slaves vote any way they want to. Northern states did not want slaves to count at all. They thought that South thought of slaves as property, not people and property can not vote. At the end of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 they agreed that a slave will count as three-fifths of a free person.">   -->  The Three-Fifths Compromise in 1787 <option value="At this time, pioneeres started to settle in many different parts of America. Some of these territories wanted to become part of the United States of America. But, North and South did not agree should the territories be allowed to have slavery. They finally reached agreement. Northwest Ordinance said that any new territory that wants to get in the Union must enter and be a slave free state. The only states allowed to have slavery are those that are already slave states and part of the Union.">   -->  Norhwest Ordinance of 1787 <option value="Allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. This made a number of slave and free states equal.It also said that slavery is legal in part of the Louisiana Terriory. It set the latitude of 30 degrees 36'N as the line that separates slave and free territories. South of this line slavery is legal and north of this line it is illegal.">   -->  Missouri Compromise of 1820 <option value="This was a bill proposed by David Wilmot from Pennsylvania. Mr. Wilmot wanted the American government to stop the spread of slavery after the Mexican war. He thought that the land that was won for America should be slave free. The Wilmot Proviso was rejected in 1847 by the Senate.">   -->  The Wilmot Proviso in 1846 <option value="Compromise of 1850 was one of the most important laws passed during the slavery. This compromise made differences between the North and the South even greater than before. This compromise allowed fugitive slaves to be caught and returned from free states to their owners in the slave states. This made the North unsafe for runaway slaves -they now had to reach Canada to be really free. ">   -->  Compromise of 1850 <option value="This act changed the agreement made in the Missouri Compromise. This Act allowed territories to choose if they want to be slave or free even if they are north of the 30 degrees 36'N latitude. The Act ended up in violence.">   -->  Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 <option value="Dredd Scott was a slave whose master moved from the slave state to the free state. He went to court to ask for his freedom. The case went all the way to the highest court. In 1857 the Supreme Court turned him down. This case is very important because it also said that Missouri Compromise is not constitutional and that government does not have right to stop the slavery. The court also said that slaves are not citizens of America and have no rights in American Courts.">   -->  Dredd Scott Decision in 1857 <option value="Kentucky senator John Crittenden wanted to pass a law that will allow slavery to be legal south of the 30 degrees36'N latitude. He also wanted to stop government from dealing with slavery in southern states. He asked that free states that gave blacks civil rights (such as New England states) take those rights away. He encouraged those states to send free blacks outside country - a movement that is known as colonization. Crittenden's compromise was discussed because some states (such as Virginia) were looking for the ways not to seceede from the Union. The compromise was rejected.">   -->  Crittenden Compromise of 1860 <option value="Act that freed the slaves and made slavery illegal. It was written by president Lincoln.
