Sports Commentator

Overview: You may not know the correct title but everyone knows what a sports announcer is. That is what a sports commentator is. Just because there are so many different sports commentators, that doesn't mean that sports commentators don't need to go to college. Most sports commentators need bachelor or masters degrees. I will further explain this career on this page. The career of a sports commentator is to explain the sport to the viewers or readers.
Schooling: To become a sports commentator you must have a degree (bachelor, master, or graduate).
Salary: A sports commentator can make anywhere from $ 26,663 to $84,029.
Job Opportunities: Finding a place to work is not that hard for a someone that just graduated college since there are smaller newspaper and radio stations that won't pay much but they will get you on your feet. Bigger TV stations, bigger radio stations and bigger newspapers will pay more but they are looking for more experienced sports commentators.

If you are interested in this career you may want to:

  • take additional writing, speech or journalism courses
  • you could try the debate team
  • try to keep athletes statistics using the newspaper and try to keep them in your head
  • go to espn.go.com and sportsillustrated.cnn.com for statistics
  • for names of commentators to interview or watch go to www.railwayinn.freeserve.co.uk/Sports%20Presenters.htm
  • you could practice while watching sports (make sure that your mom says it is okay, if you don't she might think that you are a little weird)
