Senator and Representative

Overview: Senator and Representative positions can be very interesting careers as long as you have the patience and ability to work with others. Senators and Representatives are elected by the people they wish to represent. A lot of them work extremely long hours but some have schedules that are flexible. Many of them have to work on the weekends which to some people is not what they want and that may be why you get turned off from this job. If you are a person who likes to travel this is an ideal set up because many have to go nationwide to discuss problems and settlements that need to be resolved. There are different levels of offices that you can work in such as a town, city, state, or nationwide locations. Many congressmen have to work long hours deciding whether or not to pass a bill and whether it will do the world any good. Many of these bills do not get passed because one of the houses does not believe that it will do the community good.
Schooling:If you are interested this can be a well paying job but you must go to school. To get into a job like this it is good to have your bachelor degree and higher. Also to have your liberal arts degree is a good thing. Many governments like to see that you have a specialized degree in a certain area such as law. They also like to see people return to the office that they did an internship, because you will be familiar with the career and the processes involved.
Salary Range: Senators and Representatives can make $61,000 and up. This is the salary range listed by the Occupational Outlook Handbook in the year 2000. Some Representatives and Senators can earn up to $101,000 and this was taken in a survey by Occupational Outlook Handbook in 2000.
