DOG
BREEDER

Overview:A
person who breeds dogs for the purpose of developing healthy new puppies,
and sometimes selling to consumers.
Schooling: Anybody can
be a dog breeder. All you need to do is study the type of dog you plan
to breed, and study dogs in general. You must also register with the
American Kennel Club. (A.K.C.). A few
ways to learn enough about dogs to become a breeder are to attend dog
shows and other events, such as races. You can also join a dog club
involved with your particular breed. There are many books that can help
you breed and train dogs, such as The Complete Dog Book.
Salary:The salary range
depends on how much you charge for the puppies, how well you take care
of them (trips to the vet, cost of food, etc.) You many not make anything
at all, if you're being a responsible breeder. Sometimes breeding is
a second job, or a hobby, because it's hard to make a living off of
it.
Job Opportunities:You
can breed dogs just about anywhere, just as long as you figure out a
way to let people know about you. It could be easier to breed them in
an urban area, because you could sell the puppies to a pet store; there
are just more people in the city, and thus more people who want dogs.
It could also be easier in a rural area because there would be more
room to breed the puppies. It all depends on how you plan to breed the
puppies.
Special skills:You have
to be able to handle the dogs well. You have to feed them and take care
of them up until the day the dog is bought. This can be a very tough
job. So, you must be ready to care for them and be ready to have them
running around underfoot.
